Perth Trains

Perth WA, like most Australian capital cities, has a fairly comprehensive local train network. There are four local Perth train lines, radiating out from the main Perth city train station. These commuter-focussed services are part of the Transperth transport network which also incorporates Perth's buses and some ferry services. For the traveller this means you can purchase one Smartrider card from various retail outlets to use on any of Transperth's services and it's cheaper than buying tickets on board!

The Fremantle train is the easiest and most direct way to Freo and Rottnest Island from most city accommodation in Perth. It'll take you about 30 minutes to get there from the city unless you grab a quicker express service during peak times.

You can find a train timetable at most train stations in the city. A map of Perth Western Australia will outline the different train routes around town and their proximity to Perth's sights and attractions, but you may find for most that buses are a more convenient way to go.

Considering Perth, Australia's relative isolation from the rest of the country, it's no surprise that there are several long distance rail journeys available from the city. If you're heading to Bunbury, the Australind can help you beat the Perth weather in air-conditioned comfort, the Prospector will take you to Kalgoorlie, or there's always the Indian Pacific. This iconic Australian train journey stretches from the Indian Ocean in the West to the Pacific Ocean in the East and is a must-do for the enthusiast. All long distance trains depart from the East Perth Terminal.
